Growing A Bonsai From Seed

The absorbing world of the bonsai grower is a facinating place. So long as you have infinite patience, are ready to care for a living thing for years and have a little knowledge then you are ready to enter that world.

A really good, and cheap way to begin this fascinating hobby is by growing your first tree from a seed. This is the longest route to take, but is arguably the most satisfying.

When deciding on the type of tree to grow, the advice is to go for a small tree with small leaves. After seeing success with this, it is then time to move on to larger and more difficult specimens.

If you feel this is a long time to wait, then I am afraid bonsai may not be for you.

There is no quick way to grow a tree.

There are a few things that can help speed up the growing process.

Cold stratification, this is the process of preparing the seeds for germination using cold temperatures.
Any kind of seed, if left to its own devices, spends a few months in the very cold earth when dropped from a tree.
Cold stratification, replicates this artificially.

Use a good nitrogen phosophate fertilizer once a month during spring and summer, to encourage your seeds to grow.

Also remember that correct watering of an infant bonsai tree is critical. Never let the baby plant dry out, or conversley become waterlogged. This is the fastest way to kill a young and fragile sapling.

Once you see your hardwork and patience being rewarded with the first signs of a young bonsai tree appearing above ground, then you will be hooked. And then the real hardwork begins.
